New Car Spotlight
The battle for pickup-truck supremacy rages on, with the new F-150 using aluminum as its secret weapon. Ford claims that its use of aluminum in the body and the bed reduces weight by 700 pounds—but the frame is still made of high-strength steel for strength and durability. Engines include a 3.5-liter V-6, a 2.7-liter EcoBoost V-6 or 3.5-liter EcoBoost V-6, and a 5.0-liter V-8. Ford is taking a gamble on aluminum, but if it succeeds, it could alter the way trucks are designed and built.
Honda Accord Coupe
The Accord’s pleasing blend of engaging driving dynamics and a spacious interior keeps it at the top of the market—and also helped it make our 10Best list for 2015. Available as either a sedan or a coupe, the Accord offers either a 185-hp 2.4-liter four-cylinder or a 278-hp 3.5-liter V-6. A six-speed automatic or CVT are available, but the slick six-speed manual is a joy to drive. The hybrid model boasts a lofty 50-mpg city rating; a plug-in hybrid is also available but only in limited markets.
Nothing turns heads like a muscle car, and the Camaro is no exception—behold its striking coupe or convertible styling, rowdy exhaust note, and rubber-burning attitude. The LS and LT feature a 323-hp 3.6-liter V-6; the SS gets a 426-hp 6.2-liter V-8. A six-speed manual is standard on all; a six-speed auto is optional, but on the SS it gets just 400 hp. The 1LE option for SS coupes has unique gearing, suspension, and tires with the manual only. An all-new Camaro is due in late 2015.
Jeep Grand Cherokee
The Grand Cherokee excels at climbing mountains and social circles. It offers a wealth of powertrains: a 3.6-liter V-6, a 5.7-liter Hemi V-8, a 3.0-liter turbo-diesel, and the SRT variant’s 6.4-liter Hemi V-8. There’s a choice of three 4×4 systems plus Quadra-Lift air suspension with five height settings. Comfortable interiors are trimmed with high-quality materials and offer upscale options.
